Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Pregnancy
Alcohol use during pregnancy is one of the top preventable causes of birth
defects and development disabilities. There is no known amount of alcohol that
is safe to drink while pregnant. There is no time during pregnancy when it is
safe to drink. When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, so does her baby.
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause many birth defects and developmental
disabilities. These are known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and
include fetal alcohol syndrome.
FASD can cause problems in how a person looks, grows, thinks and acts. FASD can
also cause birth defects of the heart, brain and other major organs.
About 1 in 12 pregnant women in the United States reports alcohol use. And,
about 1 in 30 pregnant women in the U.S. reports binge drinking (having 5 or
more drinks at one time).
The good news is that FASD is 100% preventable-if a woman does not drink alcohol
during pregnancy.
In a 2005 advisory, the U.S. Surgeon General stated:
-A pregnant woman should not drink alcohol.
-A pregnant woman who has already used alcohol during her pregnancy should stop
right away.
-A woman who is thinking about getting pregnant should stop using alcohol.

Wood County FASD Task Force
Beginning March 8, 2004, nine local agencies collaborated to establish
community awareness of the effects of alcohol use during pregnancy through
education, support services and diagnostic care.
Because of the large number of teens and college age women at risk in our
community, the Wood County Task Force will be targeting the youth in each of
the ten school districts and the students at Bowling Green State University.
They will use information, training and workshops that address the cause and
implications of having a child with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The
education programs will also provide information for physicians, parents and
educational professionals.
Call (419) 353-1099 or any Task Force member for more information.
