A project to renovate, refurbish, and enhance the Veterans Memorial located at the County Courthouse

History of the Wood County Veterans Memorial

In 1950, the Memorial was established following a generous donation by the Wood County Chapter of the Gold Star Mothers. The memorial served to venerate the names of their sons who had died in both WWI and WWII. As the United States engaged in new conflicts, the Korean, Vietnam, and the Medal of Honor monuments were added along with the names of those who served. Recently, Master Chief Edward Byers’ name was added to the Medal of Honor monument.

Future of the Wood County Veterans Memorial

This project will include both Site Improvement and Rebuilding phases. Structural and aesthetic enhancements will provide stability and visibility to the Memorial. Notably, the revamped Memorial will be completely wheelchair accessible. In October 2020, the Veterans Memorial Committee placed the order for the new and refurbished monuments detailed in the project plan. The existing monuments were then removed from the site on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

The new World War I & II monument will be quarried and crafted in Barre, Vermont, at the same quarry used for the original monument in 1950. The Korean War monument was also shipped to Vermont where a new stone backdrop will be added, along with cleaning and polishing. Monuments for the Vietnam War and the Medal of Honor recipients will be cleaned locally.

WOOD COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL COMMITMENT OF SUPPORT

With an expected re-dedication date of September 11, 2021, the Veterans Memorial Committee is making a final fundraising plea.

Gifts of all sizes will help.  Individuals, families, businesses and organizations making a gift of $2,500 or more will have their name placed on a recognition plaque to be installed in the Courthouse Atrium and all donors will receive a thank you for their support
